How can I fight fleas?

This is the first summer the cats and I have spent in Florida. Although we're using a topical anti-flea and tick treatment, I think it's only partially successful. We're moving to a new place within the month, which is presumably flea-free. How can I treat the kitties so we don't transport fleas to the new house? Thanks.
